Capital Campaign for a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility

CCES HHW Event

As of July 2026, CCES has secured 52% of the estimated project funds necessary to build a household hazardous waste (HHW) collection facility at 901 Saline Court, Urbana.

This facility will address the long-standing need for a convenient, safe, and environmentally responsible solution for managing household hazardous waste.

Now, we’re counting on you.

The CCES campaign leadership team is continuing its capital campaign to raise the remaining funds needed. We’re counting on you to give generously to protect our soils, water supply, residents, children, pets, first responders, and wildlife.

Why do we need this facility?

  • HHW is often dumped into drains, sewers, waterways, and landfills, or onto the ground where it can contaminate our water supply, including the Mahomet Aquifer.
  • Improperly stored HHW can result in accidental poisoning of children and pets.
  • The presence of HHW can intensify home fires.
  • Firefighters responding to fires at homes storing HHW are at risk for serious injury or death.

How much HHW are we talking?

  • The EPA estimates that each US household produces about 20 lbs. of hazardous waste per year.
  • That’s close to 1000 tons of hazardous waste generated annually for Champaign and adjacent counties.
  • The US household typically stores about 100 lbs. of HHW (e.g. paints, cleaners, oils, batteries, pesticides) in basements, garages and sheds.

What’s the real danger?

Contaminated water can cause:

  • Behavior abnormalities
  • Cancer
  • Kidney failure
  • Reproductive impairment
  • Physiological malfunctions
  • Genetic mutations
  • Physical deformations
  • Birth defects
